Choosing the wrong oboe reed is one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes oboists make. A reed that’s too resistant for your level will fight you every time you play. A reed that’s too easy will hold back your development. Getting it right matters.
This guide cuts through the confusion. By the end you’ll know exactly which reed you need.
The Beginner — Day One to Three Months
If you just picked up an oboe for the first time, your only job is to make a sound and develop basic embouchure formation. You do not need — and should not be playing — a professional reed.
What you need is a reed that responds easily, plays in tune without fighting you, and is consistent from reed to reed so you can focus on technique rather than equipment problems.
The right reed: WR Profiled Beginner ($9.95)
Machine-profiled cane, personally finished and inspected by Joseph Shalita. Easy response, open feel, forgiving for developing embouchures. This is the most affordable reed in the lineup — deliberately priced for students who go through reeds quickly.
After two to three months of regular playing, move up.
The Developing Student — Three Months to Two Years
You can make a consistent sound. You’re working on tone production, intonation, and your first pieces. Now you need a reed with more character — something that rewards developing technique rather than just tolerating it.
The right reeds:
- Mimosa Student ($16.95) — warm, focused tone in the Philadelphia tradition
- Tumbleweed Student ($16.95) — consistent response, reliable intonation
- Shalita Student — forgiving response, Philadelphia style, deliberately affordable
These reeds are still forgiving but they start asking something of you. That’s exactly what you want at this stage.
The Intermediate Player — Two to Five Years
You’re playing more demanding repertoire. You have real embouchure control. You’re starting to develop your own sound concept. A student reed will hold you back now — you need something that responds to what you’re doing technically.
The right reeds:
- Red Label Intermediate ($19.95) — medium resistance, slightly open, Philadelphia tradition. The most popular reed in the Shalita lineup.
- Tumbleweed Intermediate ($19.95) — consistent response, reliable intonation, standard American style
- Mimosa 2 Intermediate ($19.95) — warm centered tone, Philadelphia tradition
At this level the choice between reeds comes down to your teacher’s tradition and your personal sound concept. If you’re not sure, contact us and describe your situation — Joseph Shalita will recommend the right one personally.
The Advanced Student and Professional
You know what you want from a reed. You have a sound concept. You’re playing orchestral repertoire, concertos, or chamber music at a high level. You need a handmade professional reed built by someone who has played this music for 35 years.
The right reeds depend on your tradition:
Philadelphia/de Lancie tradition:
- Black Label Pro ($32.95) — flagship professional reed. Full dark tone, medium resistance, medium-to-closed opening. Requires developed embouchure. This is the reed.
- New Sandia Pro ($31.50) — slightly more open than the Black Label, warm tone, professional response
Cleveland/Mack tradition:
- Chaparral Pro ($24.95) — full resonant tone, more body, excellent dynamic range
- Mesquite Pro ($24.95) — warm earthy tone, blending characteristics, versatile
Not sure which tradition you’re in? Your teacher’s lineage determines this more than anything else. Ask them which school they trained in — Philadelphia or Cleveland. Then choose accordingly.
The Professional Solution — Subscription
