About Joseph Shalita
Joseph Shalita is the owner of Shalita Oboe Reeds, formerly Weber Reeds and is the author of the e-book Making Oboe Reeds.
He is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music and the Mannes College of Music, Joseph Shalita studied with Joseph Turner, principal oboe of the Baltimore Symphony and John Ferrillo, Co-principal of the Met now principal oboe of the Boston Symphony.
After graduation, Joseph Shaltia was invited to play assistant principal oboe of the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra in 1990 and has been the principal oboe since 2004. He has also been principal oboe of the Mineria Summer Festival Orchestra in Mexico City since 2016.
Mr. Shalita was the oboist for 24 years with the Mexico City Woodwind Quintet, the leading wind chamber music group in Mexico recording 4 compact discs of new works commissioned by the group and contemporary quintets by new and well known composers. He has been involved in the commission of roughly 30 new works and participated in concerts, masterclasses and tours to the USA, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica and France through grants awarded by the Mexican National Arts and Culture Fund.
As an educator, he has a full schedule teachingoboe and chamber music at the Ollin Yolitzly school of fine arts in Mexico City, the Panamerican University and the State of Mexico Conservatory of Music.
Mr. Shaltia has also recorded and toured around the world extensively with the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra from the USA to China and Europe.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Mr. Shalita recieved has early training through the Philadelphia Public School System, the Settelment Music School and the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra. His main teachers early on ewere Rheta Smith, Robert Jowell, David Schneider, Stevens Hewitt and chamber music classes with Shirly Curtis.
Joseph Shalita is the author of the popular E/book Making Oboe Reeds at www.makingoboereeds.com which has been spreading in popularity and has become required reading at several US conservatories and universities.
He is extremely excited to have been asked by David Weber to take over the business as he and David have been friends and collegues for over a decade, and hopes to continue the Philadelphia oboe reed tradition.
